Mallorca water quality: what to know about the island's tap water

Anyone moving to Mallorca or spending a season on the island soon notices it at the tap: the water is hard and has a distinct chlorine note. Here is a short explanation of why, and what can be done about it.

Why the tap water is the way it is

Much of Mallorca sits on limestone. As groundwater passes through the rock it picks up calcium and magnesium, which makes the water hard and calcareous. In the warm climate, tap water has to be chlorinated to stay hygienically safe on its way through the network, and that shapes both smell and taste. Near the coast, falling groundwater levels and seawater desalination can add a slightly salty note. All of this is harmless to health, but it affects taste and everyday life, from a quickly scaled kettle to the flavour of coffee and tea.

Treating the water at the tap
